Installation of OEM 12-disc CD Changer

Beginning with some 1996 models and all 1997 models, the E/K Cadillac cars (Eldorado, Seville, Deville) were pre-wired for a 12-disc trunk-mounted CD changer.  This changer is actually manufactured by Pioneer for Delco, and is completely "plug-n-play" compatible with any factory Delco or Bose radio from the era.

My '97 SLS didn't have the optional disc changer, so I set out to find and install one.  The changer part number I used is 16199553.  After installation, the changer integrates completely with the radio and steering wheel controls.  Once the changer is plugged in and loaded with at least one CD, a CD icon will appear on the radio's display face.  A blinking CD icon means the changer is still reading the CDs to determine the number and positions of the discs in the cartridge.  A steady CD icon means the changer is ready for CD play.

To insert the cartridge, slide the door on the changer all the way to the right (open).  Insert the cartridge all the way and close the door fully (you will feel the door slide past a detent at the closed position).  The changer will then start cycling through the CDs to determine number and position.  To remove the cartridge, slide the door on the changer fully open.  The changer will dismount any disc in use and slide the cartridge out of the changer.  If the door becomes partially open, but not open fully, the changer will still operate, but the radio display will show CHEK DOOR to notify you that the door is partially open.

To operate the changer:

  • Press SOURCE button to access the CD changer.

  • Press radio presets 1-6 to access discs 1-6.

  • Press and hold radio presets 1-6 to access discs 7-12 (preset 1 = disc 7, etc).

  • Press TUNE/SEEK button for CD track selection.

  • Press << >> button for CD track search (fast forward or rewind within a track).

  • Press the tape SIDE button to jump to the next CD in the cartridge.

  • Press SOURCE again to leave CD play and return to cassette or radio play.

  • If the vehicle or radio power is turned off during CD play, the system will resume when power is restored.

  • The SELECT radio control on the steering wheel acts as the TUNE/SEEK button for CD track selection.

Items needed for installation:

Pull up the trunk liner to locate the harness and connector for the CD changer.
Make a total of three cuts in the trunk carpet liner, one for the connector and
harness, one for the rear bracket fingers, and one for the front bracket mount.
I installed the two front bracket mount bolts so you can see where the cut is.

The orange writing is on mine because I bought mine used off eBay.

The front/bottom of the CD changer with bracket installed.  The 10 bolts listed
above come in a pack of 10, but only a few are used to mount the changer to
the black metal bracket.  The three "fingers" on the right side of the bracket
slide into the welded bracket on the trunk floor and the tab on the left side of
the bracket has two bolt holes to mount it securely to the nuts spot welded
on the trunk floor.
