Welcome to my Blacksburg, VA Webpage

Here, you'll find local links and other information related to where I live, the Town of Blacksburg in beautiful southwestern Virginia.

Overview

The Town of Blacksburg is located in the New River Valley, nestled between the Allegheny Mountains to the west and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east.

Geographic History

The New River was created millions of years ago, during the formation of the Appalachian mountain chain (the oldest mountain chain in the world) and ironically, despite its name, the New River is actually one of the oldest in the world.   Situated on a plateau (about 2200 feet in elevation), Blacksburg lies upon a section of the eastern continental divide, an imaginary line that marks the point where rainwater to the west of the "line" flows into the Mississippi River and to the east of the "line" flows into the Atlantic Ocean.  The west side of town drains into the New River (and on to the Mississippi) and the east side of town drains into the Roanoke River system, the James River, the Chesapeake Bay, and ultimately the Atlantic Ocean.

Cultural History

Leading two lives, Blacksburg is home to Virginia Tech University, Virginia's largest land-grant institution.  When school is in session (mid-September to mid-May), Blacksburg is a bustling city alive with constant activity and excitement.  During the summer, however, Blacksburg takes a step back in history and returns to its small-town roots.  Offering plenty of famous Southern hospitality, residents and visitors alike find truth in a phrase from a 1927 Blacksburg town map:

"The birds sing nowhere quite so sweet,
And nowhere hearts so lightly beat,
For Heaven and earth both seem to meet
Down in Virginia."
